Most people in the Poconos burn their garbage instead of paying for the pick-up. This means a lot of jar and can washing because you obviously can’t burn that stuff. I remember when I first moved to Ohio, I had finished up the mayonnaise and I started to rinse the jar out. Complete habit! I was asked what was I doing? As stupid as this may sound, the moment I remembered that I could just throw it in the trash, I was so excited. Not because I didn’t want to recycle but because it was almost like a novelty to throw it away lol

It seems like more and more people are getting involved in recycling these days. Royal even tries to get into it a little bit but he isn’t consistent. I live in a small apartment for now so I really don’t have the space for a bunch of bins. The Rubbermaid Hidden Recycler is an easy solution to that problem. It attaches to the inside of a cabinet door to collect recyclables out of sight and keeps your counters clear. The bag is durable, machine washable, and made of recycled material. Once your bag is full, you just have to easily lift the bag from the lid and cabinet by the handle to take them out to your recycle bin. The Hidden Recycler is currently available for purchase online at Rubbermaid.com and in store at Meijer. Here are a few details about the Hidden Recycler.

Hinged lid attaches to cabinet door with over the door hooks or screws

Bag is made from 65% post-consumer resin

Bag is machine washable

Comfortable handle for transport

5 gallon bag holds 36 uncrushed cans and is large enough to fit 1 gallon milk jugs

Great for single stream recyclers

Great for apartment living

The only problem I found with this product with my cabinets is the door wouldn’t shut all the way. There is nothing unusual about the design of my cabinets so I am not sure what type these would fit right on.

It is very rare that I come across a Rubbermaid product that I don’t love. I have had some minor issues with some from time to time but mostly I offer nothing but positive things to say. I really don’t even know where to start with this review. I am so ridiculously in love with these boxes! I have “cubby” unit in my living room that holds 18 “bins” total in 3 different sizes. I own so many of the fabric bins that I keep my sons toys organized in and they really just don’t hold up. The boys are constantly pulling the bins out and putting them back in. Most of them come apart at the seams. I have been using the Rubbermaid Bento Storage Boxes for many months now and much to my surprise, (considering all the others I’ve owned) these are still in like new condition!

Typical storage boxes contain your items, but the inside becomes cluttered and makes it difficult to find what you need. Rubbermaid’s Bento collection is designed to organize items, rather than just store them. The Bento Boxes have internal flex dividers, which enable you to divide the space by creating unique sections when needed. Boxes can stack vertically, or fit inside each other. Bento Toppers can act as trays, covers or lids, providing an extra layer of organization for the Bento Boxes, or hiding what’s inside. The Bento Collection is made from sturdy materials, and the heavy-duty decorative fabric enables it to remain out in your social spaces while complementing your home’s décor.

Internal Flex Dividers that can be individually popped open or closed

Toppers act as trays, covers or lids

Same size containers can stack on top of one another

Smaller sizes nest inside larger sizes for space efficient storage when not in use

CARB-certified MDF covered in durable polyester fabric

I use the large one for toys, the rectangle one to keep my spices organized in the cabinet, the lid for this one sits on our entertainment center for remote controls and the little square one holds pencils, pens etc because the internal divider makes 4 sections inside.

If you are in the market for storage boxes of this type, I personally recommend giving these a try. They are a little on the pricey side but when I factor in how much I have spent on other “fabric bins”, these are well worth the month. In this case, you get exactly what you are paying for. They range in price from $9.99 to $26.99 or you can pick up the complete 6 piece set pictured above for $99.49. Enter below using Rafflecopter to win!

It is only March and they are already asking me when the pool will be open. My oldest is actually going to be on a swim team this year! Usually bath time consists of me telling Spencer that he can’t stay in the tub for 3 hours. If he isn’t “pruney” he says he can’t get out yet. It is like some kind of a timer to him. Like if he gets out before his fingers are “pruney” the world will end or something.

While I really can’t think of anything my boys have really done in the bathtub that is funny, I did recall a picture that I took of Royal when he was just about a year old. It is one of my favorite pictures of him! When I went looking through my compurter for it, I came across another that I took when he was 3. Is tarted laughing because I didn’t remember taking the second one. I guess I thought I needed a silly follow up p[ic. RED SOLO CUP! My “baby” is going to be 10 in July. Oh my gosh, where did the time go?

I think potty training both of my boys holds some of the funniest pictures and stories. While I can’t tell most of them or share some of the pictures that I have. I did find a few of them as babies in their training stages. I really hope that none of the parents of his school friends read my blog. Oh who am I kidding, these are the pictures we break out on their first date right?! Okay, I would really never do that to them but it’s funny to say I would! The pictures are pretty cute and funny. They were both so intent when training. Below is Royal watching TV and Spencer reading lol I guess they are doing it man style!

I would love to see your kids funny bathroom moments if you have pictures! Post them in the comments. If you don’t have a picture then share your funniest story!

Clorox recently launched a fun new Web site celebrating one of the most-used and underrated rooms in our homes – the bathroom! The Clorox Lounge is turning the bathroom into the laugh room with a community hub designed to be a mom’s go-to place for comedy. Hosted by comedian, actress and mom Sherri Shepherd, the site found at TheCloroxLounge.com features hilarious anecdotes, fun contests, exciting give-a-ways, coupons and just the right amount of comic relief. An inspiration for an entire genre of comedy, the potty is often named as the number one place for moms to find a moment of quiet and a break from a busy day! Whether it’s potty training, cleaning wars, or simply rites of passage that come with kids growing-up, the bathroom is such a huge part of our lives.

The Clorox Lounge activities kick-off with Last Comic Sitting Competition and Sweepstakes, starting February 27, 2012. Over the course of eight weeks, 10 of the funniest mom and dad comics will go head-to-head in a stand-up throw-down for the chance to sit on the throne and be crowned the Last Comic Sitting. Each week, they’ll face a new challenge and based on consumer voting one will be eliminated. The grand prize winner will receive $10,000. For four weeks, you will have the opportunity to vote and narrow the comics down to the top mom and top dad.

It’s allergy season again! And for 119 million US households that are affected that means runny noses, congestion and sinus problems.

While many people find relief using over-the-counter and prescription drugs, they might not realize that something as simple as natural steam can have a profound effect on their respiratory symptoms. We’ve all heard the “old wives’ tales”…hold your baby in the bathroom with the hot shower running if they’re congested; use a humidifier to alleviate cold and sinus issues…but it’s actually proven science! The warm mist opens sinuses by thinning secretions as it hydrates and soothes irritated tissues. No drugs are needed, making it an all-natural and safe decongestant.

But while even doctors agree that steam inhalation is effective in treating some of the most common respiratory conditions, using steam and steam devices like humidifiers can be impractical (who can really stand in a hot steam shower 4x/day?), germ-prone, and sometimes pose a burn risk, particularly for children.

Now, using FDA approved technology, the NEW MyPurMist™ handheld steam inhaler is reinventing this old remedy in a completely new way — the world’s first instant, effective, safe and handheld approach to steam and humidification therapy. MyPurMist makes using steam practical and easy for those seeking a natural remedy for their cold and allergy symptoms.

MyPurMist provides instant relief for cold, allergy, and sinus symptoms via a simple handheld device that requires virtually no preparation, mess, cleanup or maintenance. It delivers instant temperature controlled steam in a germ-free environment, with no risk of scalding like other devices. That means it’s good for kids, too!

Better still, 100% of people who have purchased and used MyPurMist will recommend it to others.

Benefits of steam

Source: Hydrotherapy-Simple Treatments for Common Ailments by Clarence Dail, M.D./Charles Thomas, Ph. D.

Steam inhalation is an effective treatment in respiratory conditions and is highly recommended for treatment of the common cold, sinusitis, bronchitis, allergies and asthma. Steam relieves inflammation and congestion of upper respiratory mucous membranes.

• Steam relieves throat irritation by moistening the air.
• Steam relieves spasmodic breathing (Asthma, Croup).
• Steam loosens secretions and stimulates discharge of mucous from the throat and lungs (natural expectorant).
• Steam relaxes muscles and relieves coughing.
• Steam Keep mucous membranes from excessive drying.

I have two boys and if you are the Mom of little boys too, that statement should qualify as “nuff said”. Amazing how they can play a video game and get a bowling ball down a hole in the floor the size of a pea but they can’t manage to keep their stuff in the toilet. I’d like to hope that as they get older this will stop. Tell me it does!

You probably don’t want to admit it, or chances are you don’t even know it but, the ugly truth is 100% of homes have mold. This isn’t to say that you are an unclean person or that you don’t clean well enough. The simple fact is that while most cleaners can remove visible dirt, it doesn’t kill the Mold. This kind of grossed me out and made me evaluate the types of cleaners that I have been using. Want to know which one does do the job? The deep-cleaning Tilex® lineup is formulated to attack mold and mildew and cancel the mold show in your bathroom.

Now you might be thinking that mold if usually associated with that bathroom. Mostly you see it on the shower curtain. It is very common to find it outside the bathroom in such places as window seal,, refrigerator seals, under the kitchen sink, air registers and entryways. It grows in moist environments and room temperature conditions. Did you know that regular cleaning with a bleach-based product can effectively kill mold? My friends at Tilex want to inform you that Tilex products should be the foundation of your bathroom cleaning routine to keep mold stains out-of-sight. Mold and mildew are ALWAYS up to no good in your bathroom and Tilex will help you get rid of even the hardest to remove stains.

To celebrate the new Tilex lineup, Tilex is hosting an exciting sweepstakes with lots of cool prizes! Enter on the Tilex Facebook page and you will have a chance to win one of three 40” flat screen TVs, or one of ten Netflix subscriptions. Also, if you share the news about the sweepstakes with your friends, you’ll receive an additional entry for each friend you invite. Entries must be submitted by 3/16/12.

Check out Sonny Mold and Frankie Mildew, the Tilex® mold and mildew trouble-making stars. Use Tilex to rid these mischievous, uninvited guests from your bathroom.

If you have ever had bathroom mold, you know what a total pain in the rump it can be. Besides the fact that it looks completely disgusting in yout bathroom, it’s unhealthy for you as well. Here are a few simple ways to help prevent mold in your bathroom.

After you take a shower, make sure you clothes your shower curtain and be sure it is not folded over itself anywhere. This will allow it to dry properly.

If you have an exhaust fan in your bathroom, USE IT! This will keep the humidity levels down in your bathroom making the chance much smaller that mold will grow. If you have a window in your bathroom and it’s not -20 outside, open it. You should run your fan at least 10 minutes after you have finished showering.

If you re going on vacation during the summer months, leave the air conditioning on at 74 so humidity levels in your home don’t skyrocket. You will prevent a breeding ground for mold.

Pour a little bleach down your shower or bathtub drain every 3 or 4 months.

My mom keeps a squeegee in her shower to run over the walls and glass door before you get out.

If you have a mat in your tub, pick it up and stick it to the wall. This will help not only the back of the mat dry but also allow all of the water to get out of the tub.

I don’t usually do reviews on websites, but, when I saw GoForIt.com I knew it was something that had to be shared with other parents! I was really excited about this site. Royal (9) does not manage his time well at all. He is easily distracted and implementing things to help him focus and get things done is very important to me. He has a note taped to his desk at school and even one in the front of his folder to remind him of what he needs to do before he comes home.

Most moms would agree the the holidays were a fun and festive time, but, it’s also a time when our regular family routines seem to go right out the window. So to help your family get back on track and start the New Year off right, I have just the solution for you!

I am excited to introduce you to Goal For It, an excellent online resource that provides a variety of free solutions for personal success that are easy to use and can help bring more focus, balance and fulfillment into everyday living. I especially love their simple-to-use Chore Chart, which can help children of all ages learn essential skills in a fun and rewarding way.

This FREE Chore Chart can help teach kids, tweens & teens many important lessons, including:

Responsibility; A Chore Chart is an ideal way to help your kids feel like they are making a contribution to their family by doing their part around the house.

Understanding right from wrong; Setting behavior goals is an important way to help children strengthen their character and judgment.

Healthy Habits; Teaching good habits involving nutrition and physical activity are the cornerstone of prevent obesity in children and adolescents.

Money Matters; The optional point system teaches children three important lessons for managing money; earning, spending and saving.

The options that are available on these charts is fantastic. Everything from Making the bed to getting in your PJs. I like that there are 4 options available. It’s not just your standard take out the trash and brush your teeth type of chart. There is also an option for younger kids and Tweens/Teens. Since the boys are in both categories, it was really helpful.

The site seems to have a few corks that they need to work out (they said it was my browser so we will see) but all in all it was really fun to get the kid involved in what they think they should be doing and on what days.

EDIT: I just tried visiting the site again and all I am getting is a black screen. If you can get it to work for you, check it out because it is pretty useful!

It is a classic line, Moms and Dads have been yelling it for years. “Clean your room!” I think I heard that from my mom more than I heard her say she loved me Now that it is back to school time, the kids are doing other things and they don’t want to clean, (Not like they ever wanted to) so keeping a good organization system will really help. It makes clean up much faster when everything has a home.

Before the holidays start and all of the new toys start coming in, it’s time to figure out what to do! I used to live in a 2500 sq ft 5 bedroom home so finding places to put things was ever an issue. There was plenty of space but then, during my divorce, my boys and I moved to a 2 bedroom 900 sq ft apartment. You want to talk about having to come up with new ways to organize things? Toys were the worst and at the top of my hair pulling list.

I wanted to share a few tips on how I organized them to keep my sanity and not kill myself walking around. If you have a small space, this may help!
1. Limit the number of toys that your kids have. You don’t have to deprive them but did my boys REALLY need over 100 cars? NOPE!

2. A big thing for us is Thomas the train. Every type of train, every color of track etc. I found a cube unit on clearance years ago and it has really come in handy in my small space. Blue Bins have plastic trains, red bins have metal trains and so forth. Each of the bins are labeled as well so the kids can clean up quickly. (It’s not a great pic but I included one below)

3. Organize them by how often your children use them. You want those things easily accessible. put other things away and rotate the toys. If they want something different they can ask for it.

4. Keep like items together. All “odd” toys or nothing that goes to a set, I keep in one bin.

5. Get your kids involved. Chances are if they help you figure out where to put things, they will remember better.

6. Throw away the fast food toys! Yes they are cute for the first few days but they really make a lot of clutter. If you MUST keep them, put them all in one bin as mentioned in #5.

7. If you have the room, create work stations. Have an area for reading, a corner for crafts etc.

8. Every time a new toy comes into the house, an old one has to leave. The boys have learned that someone else would really appreciate their old toys and they like being able to find things now.

9. Do not use the closet for storage.. Why? I learned the kids see that as a toss point… open the door and toss it in! Doesn’t matter if you have the best system in there, it gets to be a disaster.

10. DONATE DONATE DONATE! We just filled up 3 garbage bags full of toys in the past 2 days. You would be amazed what they don’t want, have outgrown or is broken.

I am secretly hoping that when we move to our new house that I will have a lot more space ad the kids can have a rocking play area that is so organized I even amaze myself! Small spaces are so tough to organize, especially when there is no storage room to begin with. We may have some toys on the floor but love grow best in little houses right?

This year seemed to blow by for us and Christmas is just around the corner. It’s amazing to even say that! Of course that means here comes holiday shopping. The large amount of spending over such a small period of time, can increase the chances for identity theft and identity fraud. Simply being a smart shopper can reduce your chances but, it doesn’t necessarily ensure you have done enough to reduce all the risks surrounding identity theft during the holiday shopping season. Sometimes drastic times calls for drastic measures (I know this all to well) and this season might be the right time to go above and beyond the normal “tips and suggestions” that we hear about.

According to the National Retail Federation, 212 million US consumers spent an estimated $45 billion over the Black Friday weekend in 2010.

Leave your Debit card at home and use only a credit card or a gift card. If you don’t have a credit card, consider purchasing a pre-paid credit card to limit the amount lost if you are victimized. If you’re the target of an identity thief, you’re not losing your money but the lenders. Don’t give the criminals direct access to your funds.

Smarter Savings –Don’t open store credit, even if they are offering you 20% savings. By opening store credit you are creating more opportunities for your personal information to be exposed and/or lost and chances are good that you can find a similar discount code just with a few clicks online.

What’s Your Frequency? If your card has the volume symbol on the front or back, your card is emitting signal just looking to connect (radio frequency identification) to a card reader– and a thief knows this. RFID credit cards reduce the need for the consumer to scan their card, instead the card just connects. Identity thieves are creating devices to electronically pickpocket you if you’re carrying and RFID card in your purse or wallet. Call your lender and request a credit card without the RFID chip.

Swipe in Style – Don’t swipe your credit card at the checkout, instead, hand it over to the cashier to run through on the register. Identity thieves are compromising point of sale terminals and capturing your personal information.

Wi-Fi Worries – When browsing online, avoid shopping on public Wi-Fi networks and shared computers. You cannot guarantee the security of the computer and you are placing your personal information at risk whenever you use a public or community computer to make a purchase online.

What are some other ways you can protect yourself? Check out a Company called LifeLock. In 2005, LifeLock set out to provide proactive identity theft protection to a growing member base. As chairman and chief executive officer of LifeLock, Todd Davis has committed the last five years to building an organization that is at the forefront of helping to combat identity theft crimes. I had the chance to sit down to lunch with Todd and his staff back in August and all were extremely helpful in educating me on just how easy it is to have your information stolen. Many times I found myself sitting there with my mouth open, in disbelief that people actually came up with some of these ideas! Want to give LifeLock a try at no cost? Enter my giveaway below!

I am blessed with children who do not get sick very often. I would like to take all the credit and say it was because I nursed them but I can’t be sure of that. I am just grateful for whatever the reason. Sadly for some, it seems their children are always coming down with something.

The fall and winter is approaching quickly. It is our job as parents to keep our children healthy and minimizing the impact of cold and flu season is top of mind. Germs can spread easily when kids are in school sharing lunches and school supplies, playing with friends, and participating in extracurricular activities. It’s important to keep your kids healthy so they can stay active, alert and not miss any school. The experts at Lysol recommend getting a flu shot, washing your hands with soap and water and scrub thoroughly for 20 seconds, and routinely clean and disinfect surfaces to help stop the spread of germs. Lysol Spray and Lysol Wipes kill 99.9% of bacteria and viruses on hard non porous surfaces.

Here are some things we don and don’t do to stay healthy during the cold months.

1. One thing we do NOT do in our home is get flu shots. I have never had one and neither have my sons. Many many years ago, my then boyfriend, went to get one and he became sicker than you can imagine. I don’t think he left bed for more than 5 or 10 minute stretches. I have seen this happen to other people as well. I am just not willing to do that.

2. The amount of hand sanitizer around here is crazy. It’s in the kitchen, bathroom, living room, my purse and my jeep. My son even has one attached to his back pack! We use it frequently.

3. Public restrooms: this one always makes me laugh. We go in, we use the bathroom, we wash our hands, we touch the door handle and leave. How many people before you did not wash their hands and touched that door handle?I used to feel like I was some kind of germaphobe but I have seen A LOT of people doing this.. Wash your hands and then use the paper towel to open the door, hold the door with your foot or elbow and throw the towel away. I do this every time. I can’t say the boys always do but I know I have seen them do it.

4. I walk around the house several times a week with Lysol Disinfecting Wipes and wipe down all of the door knobs, remote controls, the phone and especially the video game controllers. I also wipe down frequently played with toys.

5. I sanitize our toothbrushes regularly to prevent the growth and spread of bacteria, germs and viruses. We have a sanitizer machine that uses ultraviolet sterilizing lamps to sanitize the toothbrush, killing harmful bacteria and viruses. If it is not in your budget to buy one, soak your brush for about five minutes once a week in mouthwash to sanitize the brush of germs and bacteria.

When I was about 10 years old, we had one of those vacuum selling people come to the door.. You know that brand I am talking about… The guy had a display piece that attached to the side of the vacuum with these pads so you could see what they were sucking up. One of the things he did was vacuum out beds. It was something that I never forgot for the next 23 years. To this day it still makes me sick thinking about it. The pad was filled with just “”disgustingness”. (Yep made that one up) It wasn’t even something I could begin to describe. I made such a big deal about this attachment that he let us keep it! I vacuumed my bed every Sunday morning for the next 5 years. I actually had forgotten about this until I was writing this post. I think I need to head on over to ProtectABed.com and start pricing King sized stuff!

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 68 percent of high school graduates – more than 2.2 million – headed to college in 2010. It’s a good bet that many of them experienced the age-old rite of passage of moving into the dorms with dozens of new friends from near and far. And with all those people moving into such a small space, it’s no wonder that bed bug infestations on college campuses are on the rise.

But now, there is a way for parents to protect their college-bound kids. Protect-A-Bed has introduced its Student Bedding Protection Kit. This Kit is a trio of products that includes Protect-A-Bed’s Twin XL AllerZip® Mattress Encasement, Protect-A-Bed Mattress Protector, and Protect-A-Bed’s Pillow Protector — does more than assist in bed bug management. Many dorm mattresses have been slept on by multiple people, are filled with dust mites and other allergens, and have stains from students past. Mattress protection creates a layer between students and what’s lurking in their mattresses, to create a more hygienic – and bed bug free! – sleep environment. Furthermore, mattress protection will prevent additional damage to the mattress in the event of an accident.

Protect-A-Bed’s AllerZip® Smooth Mattress Encasement

AllerZip® mattress encasements feature a patented BugLock® three-sided zipper and innovative Secure Seal® which completely locks the encasement in place. The AllerZip mattress encasement is completely bed bug escape and entry proof. With an innovative Allergen Flap, it provides superior bed bug and allergy protection by preventing any allergens or bed bugs from entering or exiting through the zipper. Double-stitched seams also add a further level of protection around the entire encasement. The soft smooth surface is waterproof and stainproof, featuring the innovative Miracle Membrane® with the Total Heat Transference Formula. Liquids and stains stay out, yet the state-of-the-art AllerZip mattress protector remains breathable and comfortable.

Protect-A-Bed’s Basic Mattress Protector

Protect-A-Bed’s Basic Mattress Protector provides a barrier to allergens and dust mites and keeps a mattress sanitary and protected from spills and accidents. The product has a smooth polyester surface that is cool and comfortable to sleep on. The product also features the innovative Miracle Membrane® that provides a 2-way barrier for the mattress and the user to protect against allergens, dust mites and accidents. It has a fitted sheet style skirt that will stretch to fit mattresses without shifting. It doesn’t alter the feel of the mattress and can be easily removed for washing as simply as sheets.

Protect-A-Bed’s Premium Pillow Protectors

The super soft, absorbent yet ultra-thin Premium Pillow Protector protects against allergens, dust mites and bacteria. Featuring our Miracle Membrane®, the Premium Pillow Protector is waterproof yet air vapor porous, keeping your pillow cool and comfortable. Your pillow will also be protected from liquids and stains, and is machine washable. The Premium Pillow Protector is an essential part of your healthy sleep zone solution.
